ధారానగరాన్ని పాలించే ఉగ్రసేన మహారాజుకు రూపసుందరి, హేమసుందరి, గుణసుందరి అని ముగ్గురు కుమార్తెలు. పెద్దవారైన రూప, హేమల వివాహం తమ మేనబావలతో జరిపిస్తాడు. తన అరవయ్యవ జన్మదినాన, కుమార్తెలను ‘నన్ను మీరు ఎంతగా ప్రేమిస్తున్నారు?’ అని రాజు ప్రశ్నించగా, పెద్దలు ఇద్దరూ తండ్రిని ఆకాశానికెత్తుతారు. కానీ గుణసుందరి మాత్రం స్త్రీకి భర్త దైవ సమానుడని, వివాహమయ్యాక భర్తనే అధికంగా ప్రేమిస్తానని తన సత్యనిష్ఠను చాటుకుంటుంది. ఆగ్రహించిన రాజు ఆమెను గుడ్డి, మూగ, చెవుడు ఉన్న దైవాధీనం అనే వికృతరూపునికి ఇచ్చి వివాహం చేస్తాడు. దైవాధీనం నిజానికి తన గురువు శాపానికి గురైన ఒక సుందర రాజకుమారుడు. తండ్రికి సోకిన వింత వ్యాధిని నయం చేయడానికి అవసరమైన ‘మహేంద్ర మణి’ని సాధించే క్రమంలో దైవాధీనం తన అంగవైకల్యాన్ని పోగొట్టుకుని, పలు అడ్డంకులను ఛేదించి, మహారాజు ప్రాణాలు కాపాడి గుణసుందరితో సుఖంగా జీవిస్తాడు. ఒక విషాద కథను అత్యంత భావోద్వేగభరితమైన జానపద దృశ్యకావ్యంగా మలచిన తీరు అద్వితీయం.
King Ugrasena of Dharanagaram has three daughters: Rupasundari, Hemasundari, and Gunasundari. When asked how much they love him, the elder two flatter him, but Gunasundari truthfully asserts that a woman’s greatest love belongs to her husband. Enraged, the King marries her off to a deaf, dumb, and blind beggar named Daivadeenam, banishing them. Unknown to all, Daivadeenam is a cursed prince. When the King falls fatally ill, requiring the magical ‘Mahendramani’ to be cured, Daivadeenam embarks on a perilous quest. He overcomes his physical limitations, breaks the curse, retrieves the gem, and saves the King, proving Gunasundari’s unwavering devotion.
